A bit of history

Following the war of 1870, Alsace was annexed by Germany. Germans meet in Bierstubs and drink beer. In contrast Alsatians meet in Winstubs and drink wine.

What's a Winstub

A Winstub is a real bourgeois institution.

The more traditional versions of Winstub had nothing to do with breweries has we know them today. Only wine was served in traditionnal glasses, brought in pitchers. Nowadays, Winstubs offers other varieties of beverage including marginally beers. They have therefore become sort of brasseries but  with traditional touches and decorations that try to reproduce the rustic versions of yesteryear.

When we talk about Winstub we immediately think about the Alsace region. This designation is in fact given to the type of traditional wine bar restaurant specific to Alsace and German speaking Switzerland.

Winstubs are popular and pleasant places to have a good time with family or friends and they are quite inexpensive.

A lots of people spend time in this places which offers a welcoming and  friendly atmosphere. But what makes this places authentic is their rustic side.
